Thailand Money & Budget Tips
Thailand offers incredible value for money, but knowing how to manage your finances will help you get the most from your budget.
Currency & Exchange
The Thai Baht (THB) is the local currency. Exchange rates are best at SuperRich or Vasu Exchange in Bangkok. Avoid exchanging at airports — rates are 5-10% worse. Hotels offer the worst rates.
ATMs & Banking
ATMs are everywhere but charge 220 THB (≈$6) per withdrawal. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently. Charles Schwab and Wise debit cards reimburse ATM fees. Notify your bank before traveling.
Daily Budget Breakdown
Budget travelers: 800-1,500 THB/day (hostel, street food, local transport). Mid-range: 2,000-4,000 THB/day (3-star hotel, restaurants, some activities). Luxury: 6,000+ THB/day (resort, fine dining, private tours).
Credit Cards & Digital Payments
Major credit cards are accepted at hotels, malls, and upscale restaurants. Street vendors, markets, and small shops are cash-only. A 2-3% foreign transaction fee may apply. QR code payments via Thai banking apps are increasingly popular.
Bargaining Tips
Bargaining is expected at markets and with tuk-tuk drivers. Start at 40-60% of the asking price and negotiate up. Always bargain with a smile. Fixed prices in shops and malls are non-negotiable.
